About the client!
The client is a large Canadian hospital specializing in open-heart surgery. They perform several surgeries a day and sought to automate the recording, uploading, and evaluation process. The current system is fully manual and very cumbersome. The requirement was for a streamlined and semi-automated system that allows the hospital to ingest recorded surgeries, assign specialists for evaluation, generate reports, and assign scores to the surgeons.
Challenge
The client was performing several surgeries a day, and the current system for recording, uploading, and evaluating surgeries was entirely manual and cumbersome. The client required a streamlined and semi-automated system that allowed for the ingestion of recorded surgeries, assigned specialists for evaluation, generated reports, and assigned scores to the surgeons.
The solution
Our team developed a cloud-based platform that automated the recording, uploading, and evaluation process of surgeries. The platform allowed for improved surgical training by enabling trainers and trainees to interact and review progress via a tablet-based application. The custom application allowed faculty to critique and give feedback to residents on actual cases in real-time, thus increasing their output and improving training for residents.
Features:
Web app:
The admin can review and manage all content and review stages through a web-based portal. Here, the admin can assign videos of surgeries to the relevant specialists and review results.
iPad app:
Specialists received videos for review on the application installed on their iPads. The iPad application included the following features:
-
Video review: Specialists could review videos using simple drag controls to scrub through the video.
-
Commenting: Specialists could make comments at specific timestamps and draw directly on the video frame with pen support.
-
Feedback: Specialists could provide feedback to the residents directly through the application.
-
Score assignments: Specialists could assign scores to the surgeons based on their performance.
Results
Our solution streamlined the recording, uploading, and evaluation process for open-heart surgeries at the Canadian hospital, resulting in the following outcomes:
-
Improved Surgical Training: The platform allowed for improved surgical training by enabling trainers and trainees to interact and review progress via a tablet-based application.
-
Increased Output: The platform allowed faculty to critique and give feedback to residents on actual cases in real-time, thus increasing their output.
-
Enhanced Evaluation: Specialists could assign scores to the surgeons based on their performance, allowing for enhanced evaluation.
Conclusion: Our cloud-based platform provided a streamlined and semi-automated system that allowed for improved surgical training, increased output, and enhanced evaluation for open-heart surgeries at the Canadian hospital.
