Space exploration is in the news again and this time startups are taking the lead. SpaceX and Blue Origin are just the more well known of thousands of next-generation privately owned space companies from all over the world. From space transportation and logistics and asteroid mining to deep space and terrestrial imaging, there are startups tackling every aspect of space exploration.

The main driver for this new boom in the space industry seems to be a combination of extreme miniaturization of hardware using solid-state manufacturing techniques, and the recent boom of super-efficient AI’s created using Machine Learning.

Machine Learning is changing everything. Robots and algorithms can be trained to do things that even we don’t know exactly how to do. The lack of explicit instructions makes the system an approximate one but one which far outperforms written instructions when it comes to doing tasks that are so complex that writing instructions for it is physically impossible. Software is one of the most complicated things people build. There are very few other things that require this level of perfection, with so many moving parts and changing in real time.

Practically, we have come to accept that absolute perfection is unreasonable to expect and bug detection and fixing is a major part of the software development process. Software bugs have been notorious for embarrassing delays in multi-billion dollar projects like the case of the F35 Lightning II (Joint strike fighter), and we need an effective way to mitigate, detect and fix these bugs if we want to be creating more and more complex software in the future.

Writing clean, organized, modular and readable code is one way to make this process easier. Many automated bug fixing and testing tools are also available. But these mostly use conventional heuristic search to detect bugs. The main disadvantage of this is that the system cannot detect method-invocation related bugs or prioritize between a large number of patch candidates and the patching has to be done manually.

Fujitsu, Japanese based Tech Giant has successfully used machine learning to create an AI that will completely change our approach to the development process, eventually making bugs, a thing of the past. Expected to launch in 2018, Fujitsu’s tool uses Big Data to train AI models to detect and fix bugs in object-oriented languages that are used in large-scale business applications including JAVA. The system is has proven itself to be much more effective than current tools for single fault location bugs, also detecting and fixing method invocation related bugs that traditional tools cannot.

Besides the hype, Machine Learning is fast becoming an essential part of our problem-solving strategy, allowing us to surpass our limitations and augment our abilities to an extent never before imagined.

Airbnb recently showcased an AI built using Machine Learning that can instantly interpret rough sketches into workable prototypes for UI/UX Design. From what I have seen online it looks amazing and gives us a very small glimpse into what is coming.

Even though computing power has been increasing exponentially every year since then, and programming languages have been evolving into greater levels of abstraction, we are no closer to a perfect Artificial Intelligence than we were 50 years ago.

If we cannot properly describe to ourselves how we write code, how can we program a computer to?

Machine Learning is one solution to overcome this problem. If a program can grow and learn from its experiences like how a human does, perhaps we don’t need to worry about the intricacies of writing the code ourselves and have it evolve and grow over time like a baby grows into an adult. All Tesla Cars come equipped with an array of sensors including Cameras, Infrared and Ultrasonic sensors, and a central processor that allows it to collect data from 360 degrees around it, process it, and make quick decisions. Tesla has demonstrated on numerous occasions that their Autopilot can actually be safer than a human driver in avoiding accidents. But, even though every Tesla Car since the first models has come equipped with all the hardware necessary to run autopilot, it has only been activated recently through a software update.

Every single car is continuously connected to a swarm network through Tesla’s partnership with Verizon and other service providers. The cars are continuously recording and transmitting driving data to a machine learning Algorithm that is continuously learning and evolving. Three years after the first cars rolled out, Tesla Announced, that with a software update every car will now have the self-driving capability. Using this technique, Tesla was able to achieve in a few years with a few core developers what would have otherwise taken an army of coders thousands of years. In fact, many Tesla owners are reporting that the autopilot system seems to be getting better every time they use it.

Everyone who has used the popular digital assistants like Apple’s Siri and Google’s Alexa has had experience with these systems breaking down if asked something strange or unexpected. Even though this is slowly changing, with these companies using machine learning to make their systems more robust, they are still good examples of an Expert System designed around responses based on pre-programmed combinations of data.

To create an Expert system, first, you need an expert. For example, you could have a Doctor note down every possible combination of symptoms in a large database, and then use a series of IF-THEN statements to diagnose a patient. This system works very well and is very accurate but comes with some core limitations.

1. You need an Expert, and your system is limited by the expert’s knowledge and experience.
2. The expert needs to note down every possible combination and if something gets missed, or is presented with something new, the system cannot adapt.
3. As the complexity of the problem and number of possible combinations increases, it becomes physically impossible to create a database manually, this is often referred to as a Combinatorial explosion.

Machine learning is a programming technique that is quickly becoming popular because it frees us from the above limitations. The idea is to write a relatively simple program that can build its own database of combinations based on certain defined outcomes. The program can then be trained, by evaluating the results, and over time learns and gets better at the task it was designed for. This technique closely matches how the human brain processes information and get better over time through practice. The only difference is that a program can run 24/7 and never gets tired, so the learning process is very fast.

The result is an algorithm that gets better over time, does not need an expert, and can cope with new situations that it has not faced before.

The Icon amphibious aircraft is a popular and successful two seat personal flying solution, but it is more aircraft than car. On the other hand there are some true aircraft car hybrids like the AeroMobil Roadster and the Gyro-copter based Pal-V.

Whatever the approach, one thing is for certain. You will need to learn how to fly and get a pilots license to operate any of these vehicles. This fact may be the single most limiting factor that will prevent mainstream adoption of these vehicles. Even with safety standards being enforced and backups designed to cope with system and engine failures, minimizing the Human Error factor is the most difficult problem, and it can not be solved using traditional design solutions.

Fly by wire is not a new concept. All high performance military aircraft have been using Fly By Wire since the 70’s. The famous F-16 is one of the first aircraft to use this technology to great effect. These aircraft are designed to be aerodynamically unstable, and virtually impossible to fly manually. The pilots inputs are reinterpreted by a computer program and appropriate commands are given to the flight surfaces to do what is desired by the pilot. This approach results in Super-maneuverability and Supersonic control that was not possible using traditional methods.

Recent Developments in artificial intelligence has taken this one step further. Quad copter drones are everywhere now. They are being used with great effect in Surveillance and Film Making. Dji’s most popular Phantom Drone can be flown in winds of 57kph and still maintain stability enough to take smooth stutter free videos. They effectively fly themselves.

The Chinese Company E-Hang is looking to implement a similar Drone design for their personal air transport solution in Dubai. It is an electric Quad-copter that can be told where to go and it will take off and fly you to your destination without the passenger making a single flight input. In fact if you look in the cockpit, there are no flight controls at all. Just a large LCD touch screen where you can set your destination.

E-Hang’s solution is proving to be the most promising since it completely removes the human error element and is the direction that needs to be taken for mainstream adoption of flying cars and flying taxi services in the future.

Humans have always used tools to amplify their abilities. Besides the obvious fire and Stone tools, language is the probably the most important, allowing us to create complex thoughts and share them, collectively raising the knowledge and experience of the whole species. The next evolution of language is Mathematics. It is the method we use to take those complex thoughts and apply logic to them, to effectively, predict the future. Mathematics is the basis for all our technological achievements throughout history, leading us through the Industrial Revolution and beyond, changing how we live our lives completely. What the Industrial Revolution did to human strength, the more recent development of the Microprocessor has done to human thought. The Internet  has completely changed our lives, affecting each and every one of us, connecting us in ways that were never possible before, facilitating information exchange on a global scale and raising our collective consciousness to the next evolutionary level, making it a revolution as important as language itself.

But, till recently Computers have been limited by the instructions given to it by its human operators, who sometimes have to write millions of lines of code requiring hundreds of thousands of man hours of coding, to get the results they want. This is now a major limitation owing to the sheer size of the inputs required, which is soon going to become a physical impossibility as requirements become more and more complex.

Enter Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This new tool in our arsenal is going to be the next great revolution. Simulated neural nets can learn how to do things by experience and get better at the jobs they were designed to do over time. This is similar to how Humans develop skills through experience and practice. Effectively, the program writes itself. IBM’s Watson is one such neural net, built to take decision making to another level. It has the capability to analyze information written in human languages in the form of documents, ledgers, or even use information from the entire internet and come to conclusions, similar to how a human would, and then present that information in the form of answers to questions. This ability of computers to understand language and form an opinion is going to revolutionize how we interact with information. Several jobs that involved studying thousands of documents like in the legal, medical, safety, insurance, business, banking and political sectors will now take a few seconds instead of a few months. The implications are profound.

In 2013 IBM announced that they will be providing Watson’s services on the cloud to software developers for integration into their software and applications. This is becoming a reality sooner than anyone expected and the next app you use on your phone just might be powered by Watson.

Block-chain is the new cryptography technique that is going to revolutionize how value is exchanged. It uses a distributed ledger system that ensures complete data reliability and is inherently tamper proof.  Till now the internet has been used very effectively to share information, to some extent almost replacing formal institutions like universities as the primary source of knowledge for the public . However value, money etc. has traditionally been transferred using a mediating authority like a bank or government. Bitcoin is changing that, and the underlying technology known a Block-chain is having a profound impact on how value is handled. Crypto currency, is the most obvious use of Block-chain technology but Block-chain itself is proving to be useful for all sorts of jobs that require a secure permanent ledger.

This is how it works. Every computer that is a part of the network has an encrypted copy of the ledger called a block. Any change to the ledger, gets approved encrypted and recorded into every single block that’s part of the network, forming a block chain. This way even if a few computers on the network get tampered, destroyed or hacked the ledger still remains reliable. The bigger the network is, the more secure it gets. Banks, Law firms and Hospitals are some of the first adopters. These institutions require a very reliable method of keeping records and Block-chain is the perfect solution.

The main advantage of the Block-chain is the lack of a central server, however some very complicated calculations have to be carried out when changes are being made to the ledger and this requires large amounts of processing power which in turn requires energy in the form of electricity. Currently for Bitcoin, users can lend their computer’s processing power to the network in exchange for a small amount of bitcoin, these are called Miners.  In recent years mining has been taken to another level with hundreds of acres of processing farms being operated by individuals, large corporations and governments. This may be the main limiting factor to the wide adoption of Block-chain, but with recent advances in graphics card technology, it has become a more realistic proposition.

Self Check-out is a relatively new concept spearheaded by companies like Amazon GO. Despite the delays the company has faced, there is no denying that this is the future of retail.

The concept is simple, you walk into a store with your mobile phone that has an app installed and running, as you pick up items from the store shelves, they automatically get added to the app, you can then simply walk out carrying your items and you will automatically be charged using your preferred mode of payment. There are no checkout lines, no cashier, and no clumsy change to deal with.

This technology has already been adopted widely to some extent by services such as Airlines, Movie Theaters and Hotels who are using the resulting speed and convenience to streamline and improve the customer experience.

Even though Microsoft’s TAY AI Chatbot was a bit of a disaster on twitter, the experiment has proved that in the near future Artificial Intelligence Driven Personal assistants will be able to talk like humans, take calls, perform customer interaction and customer support, all on their own.

Berwin Leighton Paisner, London based international law firm will not make a statement about how much money they have saved implementing RAVN System’s Applied Cognitive Engine (ACE) in late 2015, but they will say that the months it used to take them to read, sort out and analyze the hundreds of documents required to conduct their business, requiring them to form large teams of unlucky trainees and sometimes requiring them to temporarily hire extra personnel, now takes just a few seconds to carry out. RAVN System’s ACE uses Artificial Intelligence to Read, Analyze, Interpret and Summarize key information from documents and unstructured data. The service can be either carried out on the cloud or locally and once all the documents have been uploaded the users can simply ask RAVN ACE questions like in a search engine or get summaries of the relevant parts. Still in the rudimentary stages, Eva is capable of answering queries and directing customers to the appropriate services. Eva is capable of learning from her interactions with customers and the service is expected to improve over time. HDFC Bank has announced that in the near future Eva will be capable of handling Real Bank Transactions and provide the customers with a Human like personalized banking experience.
